Saving Energy and Money

The so-called “green” movement continues to gain more and more momentum. The reason is that saving energy is not only good for the environment but can also help you to save money, especially at home. These tips can get you started.
First, try taking shorter showers. You might use a timer to keep track of how long you are in the shower each morning or each night. Each gallon of hot water that must be heated for a shower uses a lot of energy, which translates in significant costs. Adjusting your shower time is a good way to save.
Another good way to save on costs and energy is by adjusting the water temperature. You can try taking cooler showers and washing laundry in cold water only. You can also set your hot water heat thermostat to a lower temperature. Experts recommend about 120 degrees to maximum energy and cost savings without compromising comfort.
The air conditioning thermostat can also be readjusted in order to save money. Most of the newer air conditioning units can be programmed to turn on and off at certain times of day. When such energy efficient settings are enables, the air conditioning will not run when no one is home, thus saving money. You can also adjust the temperature of your thermostat to the ideal conditions for heating and cooling. Experts generally recommend 78 degrees in the summertime and 62 degrees in the wintertime.
Also make sure that you are not wasting energy (and money) on devices that you are not using. Many electronic devices as well as household appliances consume power even when they are not turned on. A good way to minimize this is by unplugging any device when not in use. You can also rely on power strips to cut off energy to several devices when they are not needed.
These are some simple ways to get started reducing energy costs in your home today.
